Cormac McCarthy’s Typewriter Brings $254,500 at Auction | |||||
 The little typewriter that clacked out about 5 million fairly renowned words over 50 years — with the able assistance of the novelist Cormac McCarthy — ended up being worth a lot more than anyone expected. A heavily weathered, light blue, Lettera 32 Olivetti manual machine that Mr. McCarthy said he bought in 1963 for $50 and used to type all his novels, including a couple that won a Pulitzer Prize and a National Book Award, sold Friday at Christie’s to an unidentified American collector for $254,500, more than 10 times its high estimate of $20,000. (The price includes Christie’s commission.) The proceeds will be donated to the Santa Fe Institute, a nonprofit interdisciplinary scientific research organization. Glenn Horowitz, a rare-book dealer who handled the auction for Mr. McCarthy, told The New York Times earlier this week: “When I grasped that some of the most complex, almost otherworldly fiction of the postwar era was composed on such a simple, functional, frail-looking machine, it conferred a sort of talismanic quality to Cormac’s typewriter. It’s as if Mount Rushmore was carved with a Swiss Army knife.” Mr. McCarthy will not be using the opportunity to go digital after all these years. 'I'm a Celebrity' pair in rat-eating row | |||||
  Gino D'Acampo, the winner of I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!, and fellow contestant Stuart Manning are facing criminal charges for animal cruelty after cooking and eating a rat on the TV programme. The pair were members of a group in "exile" for part of the series, which meant meagre rations of rice and beans. A lack of meat prompted the contestants to apparently catch, kill and eat a rat. D'Acampo, 33, said in the show's video diary room: "I saw one of these rats running around. I got a knife, I got its throat, I picked it up." The group, including 30-year-old Manning, ate the rat and enjoyed the meal. Chief Inspector David Oshannessy, from the RSPCA in New South Wales, said it was not acceptable that an animal had been killed as part of a performance. ( more ) source

 Glen, New York (CNN) -- The lead singer of the rock band Weezer was involved in a bus accident Sunday that left him and another passenger in an upstate New York hospital. Rivers Cuomo, 40, complained of rib pain and was transferred, along with one other passenger, to St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam, New York. Cuomo's wife, daughter, and a fifth passenger on the bus were uninjured. The bus was traveling from Toronto, Ontario, to Boston, Massachusetts, for a show Monday night at the Agganis Arena at Boston University. The accident occurred shortly after 7:30 a.m. Sunday, while the bus was traveling eastbound on the New York State Thruway near the city of Amsterdam, according to Sgt. Brian Dollard with the New York State Police. The driver said the back end of the bus slid on ice, then went into the median and hit some reflective posts before crossing back over the highway, going over the guardrail and landing in a ditch. It had snowed about two inches overnight, police said. The roads were generally wet Sunday morning, but not covered in snow, Dollard said. Police said they do not suspect drugs or alcohol were a factor in the accident. The vehicle is a 2009 Prevost tour bus registered to Night Train Coach Inc., out of Tennessee. Cat Power Working on New Album  Fans of Cat Power's band-less early years just might be in for a treat when the singer-songwriter eventually unveils her first album of original material since 2006's The Greatest. Though the record is still in the very early stages of development, Chan Marshall chatted about it in an interview with Australia's Courier-Mail that ran today. (Via Largehearted Boy.) Talking about the new stuff, she said, "It's just me this time... I don't know if I should push all these [new] songs away and actually try to write and record it with the band. I don't know what to do. But I'm at a point where my heart tells me, 'Chan, you haven't played piano or guitar for four or five years,' and I do have guilt about that. People ask me, 'When are you going to play by yourself?' I have problems with strange yearnings and guilt." She also added, "I'm also frightened because some of them are sad again and I feel really nervous about that." Not exactly definitive, but it's something. Marshall is set to tour Australia with her Dirty Delta Blues band in December and January. L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center condemns anti-gay Buju Banton Grammy nod as 'affront to all LGBT people' | |||||

In a posting to their website on Friday, the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center condemned what they called “the appalling Grammy nomination for Buju Banton, a performer whose music promotes the violent murder of LGBT people.” The Recording Academy announced on Wednesday that Banton’s 2009 album Rasta Got Soul was nominated for Best Reggae Album. “We’re shocked that Buju Banton, a singer with a long record of performing a song that glorifies the murder of gay people, would be honored with a Grammy nomination, regardless of the artistic merit of any of his work,” said the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center’s public affairs officer Jim Key, in a statement on the website. “Throughout his career, Banton has performed music that promotes a culture of violence against lesbian and gay people; he sings in ‘Boom, Bye Bye’ that ‘faggots get up and run’ when he comes, that ‘they have to die,’ and that he will shoot them in the head or ‘burn them up bad.’ He is completely unrepentant, refuses to stop performing the song.” In August, Banton’s U.S. tour was canceled, seemingly because of the protests of the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center. Representatives for the Recording Academy, which oversees the Grammy Awards, and Gargamel Records, the label behind Banton’s last album, have not yet returned emails seeking comment. He's so sorry that he spent the majority of his 20/20 undermining her statements on the incident while promoting himself for the swell guy he really is. In yet another softball interview regarding Brown's brutal attack on ex-girlfriend Rihanna earlier this year, Robin Roberts sat down with the oh-so-redeemed R&B star to discuss the abuse, the fallout from the abuse, how he made Rihanna cry with a song she claims she's never heard before, and and perhaps most importantly, to promote his new album and show off his dope sneaker collection. Isn't he the coolest, you guys?! Brown seems to take a great deal of pride in the fact that he made Rihanna cry with the song he wrote for her, as if it's some great accomplishment on his part that he was able to evoke an emotional response from a woman he beat horribly just months earlier. Whether or not Rihanna has heard the song is unclear, but the point is that she said she didn't, and Brown still insists on undermining her interview in order to promote himself as some romantic savior with magical songwriting healing powers.
